History: Vanessa Baez was an everyday woman with extraordinary courage.  The first Vanessa Baez Memorial Women’s Brunch was held in March of 2004 just six months after her passing from complications of a 5-year battle with sarcordosis. The decision to hold a women’s brunch came from the desire to celebrate the spirit of sisterhood around the time Vanessa would have been celebrating her 30th birthday. It was a small gathering of 12 women held in her sister Amy’s home where each woman brought something to share. In subsequent years the brunch has been held as a fundraiser supporting various non-profit organizations assisting women. In 2009 the brunch became the official closing event of the annual Spoken Soul Festival, a three-day event that supports women artists. Past guest speakers have been chosen for exemplifying the annual theme “Celebrating Everyday Women With Extraordinary Courage.” Speakers have included Sabrina Cohen for the Genetics Policy Institute, Carmen Gonzalez for Feeding the Mind, Somy Ali for No More Tears, Leslie Neal for ArtSpring, and Elena Linares for SafeSpace.

Carla Hill

Carla Hill, a former public school teacher and current Education & Outreach Manager for South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, is a spokeswoman and advocate for early detection awareness and research for the impact of breast cancer on young women, especially those of African descent in the Caribbean.  After receiving a kidney transplant 13 years ago and experiencing two breast cancers within the last 8 years, Carla and her husband, Marlon Hill started the Carla Hill & Hazel Bethel Breast Cancer and Organ Donation Awareness Fund (also known as the Hill & Bethel Fund) held at the Miami Foundation. This special fund also celebrates her mother’s triumphant survival of breast cancer.
